Unfortunately, Epson does not sell the ink switching mechanism or the dampers as a replacement part. The problem is the ink switching mechanism for PK and MK. In my case I had perfect nozzle checks when using MK, so that rules out a defective print head. Some individuals have stated that it is a bad print head, but I do not buy that as the print head shares the same channel for PK and MK. The problem went away when I switched to matte ink. I had the same problem with unexplained photo black cartridge draining and getting drips of black ink on my prints. I then let the machine sit 1-2 days to let any air bubbles dissolve, and reran test print/cleaning. I also used a special cleaning cartridge and syringe (see link) to flush out the head (although I used the cleaning fluid from inksupply-see links).Īfter reassembly, I ran a test print, noticed some gaps, reran a couple of cleanings. You can also replace the entire damper assembly (fleabay has it for about $180). I also cleaned out the thingie that switches between matte and photo blacks by squirting into it cleaning fluid sold by (you'll see when you disassemble it). Instructions are NOT on the manual, but the dampers are clustered in one assembly located on top of the print head and can be disassembled if you take your time. I found the service manual on line and changed the dampers. I had bought my printer used and had a couple thousand pages run so I figured nobody had done any service-which would mean ink clogs. I did a bunch of searches, and read on a forum (inkjetmall I think) something about changing the dampers as routine, annual maintenance. Plus, yellow started printing black or grey/gray no matter what I did. I had the same problem-black ink drained out completely-twice. Turns out photo black and yellow share the same damper (you'll see when you change them). Before you throw it away, change the dampers which you can buy on fleabay.
